"This was one of the first new songs I wrote for what would become The Preserving Machine. I had been kicking around various ideas in my head for a while, and it wasn’t long before I realized - hello! - there was a theme going on. All my ideas were obviously pointing to what being in the band meant for us, and now that we could look back on everything we did with a fresh perspective, the overriding feeling was total gratitude. We started the band with every intention to give it our all or die trying. But we never expected to get back so much love from fans all over the country, and to a degree the world. It’s not something that we take lightly, nor is it something we feel anyone in our position should just brush off. The connection is real and we still have lifelong friendships from people all over the place to prove it.

But guess what? We wouldn’t have even made it down the highway to play a road gig in a neighboring city in our own state without the support of the friends, bands, club owners, bar owners, radio DJs, and local record stores of the town we started out in, Manhattan, KS. Everyone who was around the underdog music scene that existed in Aggieville back in those days knows how special it was. And as cool as the scenes in Lawrence and Kansas City were, our friends in bands from those places knew it and felt it too when they played there. The scene wasn’t jaded, it was hungry and more than excited about having a good time and supporting local music.

Even as the band gained popularity on the road, we always felt our true home was where we started. And sure enough, when we played the first reunion shows after breaking up, it wasn’t lost on me that the biggest groups of fans who travelled to see us, who came out and sang every song along with us, were from fucking Manhattan, baby.

So I decided for the new record, I wanted to make a full-on UFB anthem dedicated to the underdogs and to the spirit of the band-scene community we and so many of our friends were a part of. I sat down with the guitar and immediately sang the chorus lyrics and chords. It was that fast. No second guessing, just feeling it. This song wasn’t gonna be some sappy, slow dad-rock number.
